The Psalm:150 Symphony is a non-profit community orchestra aimed at revitalizing the sound and image of symphonic music in our urban community, particularly in the ears and eyes of young adults. Psalm:150 will change the way that orchestral music is done, providing musicians, contemporary composers, and listeners with a refreshing opportunity to expand their musical horizons.

Today many people in Metro Detroit think of orchestral music as the sound of soothing violins to put them to sleep. And while there is a higher awareness of jazz among Detroiters, many do not know that the contemporary ideas of 20th century Classical music have been the basis for improvisations among countless jazz musicians from John Coltrane to Wynton Marsalis. Moreover, it is hard to imagine America without the rich orchestrations we have given the world from big band to film scores, all rooted in orchestral music.

Orchestral music is more than soothing violins. A variety of instrumental sounds and expressions, together mathematics and emotion form the invaluable language of orchestral music. Listening to it and studying it empower both the logical and creative centers of the mind. Furthermore, in combination with other art forms, from sacred music to the movies, the effective potential of orchestral music is endless. However, too many do not know what this music is, or that it even exists-especially in the inner city. Fortunately, Psalm:150 is a solution to this lack of knowledge and exposure.

Through our New Creation Concert Series, Metro-Detroit will benefit from a stimulating program that will surely deliver great orchestral music and expose audiences to its inspiration and challenges. Within the program, there is a particular focus on urban youth and adults who have yet to experience the power of orchestral music. Concerts will be extended to this target group, providing discounted and free tickets as needed to ensure that the Psalm: 150 Symphony will reach as many as possible.

The Psalm:150 Symphony will also host a variety of programs and concerts intended to inspire and educate urban youth, visiting middle schools, high schools, and colleges.
